navigation
Are you a regular hill walker, but always
follow a book, or have never learned to use a compass? If
so, this is the course for you! Learn basic navigation
skills whilst enjoying a day long walk in the beautiful
Derbyshire Peak District.
A 1 day course, which will set you up with the basics of
using a map and compass over easy open moorland.
Starts with a short overview, followed by a walk through
fields and moorland using a map and compass.
Includes:
• maps & scales • contours relief & height • taking
a bearing from the map & walking on it • taking a
bearing from the ground & relating to map.
• pacing & timing • finding features on the ground •
moving on steeper ground • using a compass.

Improvers (intermediate)
Practice the basic skills and enjoy a challenging walk on
the moors of Kinder Scout.
The 1 day “improvers” navigation course is for people who
already know the basics of using a map and compass, but
want to gain confidence using their skills on difficult
open moorland. The walk will be approx. 10.5 miles
involving crossing the centre of Kinder Scout.

Using GPS for moorland and mountain
navigation
Have you recently bought a GPS unit, and are unsure what to
do with it? Would you like to be able to extend your
navigation skills by using GPS?
Take it all one step further by learning to use a Garmin or
ViewRanger GPS in conjunction with Memory Map.
This training course includes understanding how a GPS
works, creating waypoints, relating where you are to the
map, creating a route and walking it.
